El Greco

El Greco
(1541–1614)
   Artist.
El Greco was born Domenico Theotocopoli in Crete. He is thought to have been a pupil of titian in Venice. By 1577 he had moved to Spain where he lived for the rest of his life. Almost all his paintings are of religious subjects and his works include The Disrobing of Christ for the Church of Santo Domingo, Toledo, and the altar pieces for the Hospital of San Juan Bautista, near Toledo. His pictures are highly distinctive with dark backgrounds, austere, elongated figures and an extraordinary atmosphere of intense piety.
